Iloilo traffic aide killed on duty

A TRAFFIC aide in Iloilo City died on duty after he was hit by a delivery truck on Corner Iznart and Delgado Streets around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday.

Miguel de Asis Jr., 51, a resident of the village of Caingin, La Paz district, was on his afternoon and night shift duty when he was rammed by the truck driven by Gilbert Segunla, 19, a shopping bagger who was practicing to drive during the incident.

De Asis was standing beside the railings near the overpass in front of Amigo Terrace Hotel and was pushed some 20 meters away down to a gutter.

Segunla is detained at the Police Precinct I and will face criminal charges for reckless driving without a license leading to homicide.

The City Government has assured to give at least P50,000 financial assistance for the victim’s burial and family.

Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office executive assistant Mitch Antiquena said de Asis has worked for the city for eight years. The traffic aide also served as village councilor of Caingin.
