Does it matter?

WE ALL know the drastic change in the academic calendar in the Philippines. We know the reason behind this is to synchronize ours with other ASEAN universities. Question is, is academic calendar necessary in determining the universities’ global standing?

Despite the oppositions of many, the change actually does matter.

The proposal to change the academic year was presented by four of the top universities in the Philippines. This was proposed so that we would be at par with not only ASEAN countries but also the United States.

According to the new academic calendar, college and university classes for the first semester will begin in August instead in June. The whole school year will end in May.

The change resulted disapproval from a lot of parents and students due to the unnecessary increase in expenses and alterations of the studies of the children.

In the longer run however, the shift will help students to attain more academic experience and participation from the rest of the world.

More participation means more training. More training means improving skills that are necessary in the industry. In return, it will be easier for them to apply for a job abroad.

When we think about it, it’s really is like a domino effect. When students do more and do well, this puts the school in a good standing, bringing our country to a better spot in the global education landscape.

Aside from the competency of the country’s schools, this change will also avoid the rainy season which is helpful to students.

Although some may gripe about the joy of having class suspensions due to typhoons and other calamities, it is a hassle and greatly inconvenient.

We have already started our advancement in our education system by implementing the K to 12 program. This is just one step to many more in the future.

Jayvenn Antonio, a communication student from De La Salle University, said in Yahoo!’s article, “the move could also invite better opportunities and privileges for students in the future.”

Indeed it will. This big change will not only open doors but also windows of possibilities for students and for the whole country.
