Dolphin hit by boat, dies

A SPINNER dolphin was found dead in Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City, at 6 a.m. yesterday.

The five-foot dolphin was said to have been hit by a pump boat and was washed ashore, said Andy Berame, coastal law enforcement coordinator of Task Force Kalikasan-Lapu-Lapu City.

An autopsy by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR 7) discovered a bruise on the dolphin’s head that led to hemorrhage.

Berame said incidents like this are not rare. Spinner dolphins are common in Mactan and are naturally playful, he said.

Berame said people should be more careful and must co-exist with other creatures to protect nature.

The dolphin was buried in a material recovery faculty in Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

“This is the second dolphin death incident this year,” Berame said. (Philline Janson, CNU Comm Intern)
