56% of Negros kids get immunization

FIFTY-SIX percent of the 243,522 children in Negros Occidental to be vaccinated by measles rubella and polio have so far been reached through the month-long mass immunization campaign of the Department of Health (DOH).

Provincial Health Office chief Ernell Tumimbang said yesterday the Department of Health (DOH) is aiming to vaccinate 11 million children nationwide until September 30.

Tumimbang, however, said local health centers will still continue with the vaccination campaign after September.

He reiterated his call to the parents to support the campaign to immunize children aged 9 months to below 5 years old.

The PHO chief said parents can bring their children to the nearest health centers and have them vaccinated for free.

Children aged 0 to below 5 years old will get two drops of oral polio vaccine, he added.

In Negros Occidental, Murcia town topped the list of local government units with the most children reached after already reaching 90 percent of its target.

PHO records show that of September 12, 9,462 children in Murcia were already vaccinated.

It is followed by La Castellana with 72.3 percent; Manapla, 69.32 percent; and Pontevedra, 68.95 percent.
