Councilor promises day care for village

ASSOCIATION of Barangay Captains (ABC) president and Davao City Council member January Duterte vowed to provide a day-care center at Barangay Gumitan in Marilog District to send more kids in school.

"Ako isip usa ka babae ug inahan mibati sa inyong sitwasyon, ang mga bata na alang nag eskuela sa payag, apan bisan pa man sa sitwasyon madasigon kamo nga nag suporta sa ilang kaugmaon, ug padayon ma kun gana gasuporta sa akong dakbayan, tungod niini daku kayo ang akong pasalamat sa inyong tanan (As a woman and as a mother, I felt your situation as the children are attending classes in shanties. Despite their condition, you continue to encourage them to get educated and you continue to support for their future and, you continue to support our city, for this I am so thankful to all of you)," Duterte said.

Women and children in this far-flung village of Marilog district will soon see an edifice which they long dreamed for their children.

The proposed day care center will cost around P1 million, Duterte said. Gumitan, Marilog District is the abode of about 2,000 rural folks whose economic activity largely depends on farming. The village can be reached through a five-hour ride from the city.

"I want to spend most of my time in barangays and be with the people in the rural areas," Duterte said.

"We used to bring our pre-schoolers to the day care center here, we been used to make this small shanty a learning center because we thought we are forgotten by government because the needs are for children who are not voters yet," Erma, 38, a mother of five, said in vernacular.

Gumitan Barangay Captain Fernando O. Banayao was elated about the announcement of Duterte.

"Mura kog makuyapan sa kalipay, sa kalayo sa among barrio tagaan mi ug nindot nga day care center halos one million (I almost collapsed I can't believe that despite our distance from the city center, we will be having a million worth of day care center)," Banayao said.

Erma and the rest of parents and children in Gumitan are hopeful that the construction of the day care center will soon start.

Duterte said the materials for the building were already delivered last week.
