Cebu business forum to discuss PH economy, monetary policy

DESPITE global economic growth still hovering below the pre-2008 Great Recession trend, the Philippines has been doing quite well. The country’s economic growth bested all others in East Asia, except China, in the last couple of years.

That also came with the much improved Philippine standing in global competitive as reported in the Global Competitiveness Report prepared yearly by the World Economic Forum. This year, the country ranked 52nd out of 144 economies covered in the report –

up from 59th out of 148 in the previous report.

What are the impetuses of the country’s growth this time? What new government policies were introduced to make it possible? Had the business sector been correctly reading and responding to these polices to improve their own standing against their competitors? Had the higher growth path been good to the regions and the people and the business outside the national capital? Is the current growth trend sustainable?

To tackle these issues and discuss what is happening in the Philippine economy, especially Cebu and Central Visayas, the Cebu Business Club, in cooperation with the Department of Economics of the University of San Carlos, will hold the 2014 Economic Review and Business Forum on Oct. 10 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo will give an economic review of the performance of the country, the specific sources of growth, future prospects and what policy changes were made to achieve growth and stability.

National Economic and Development Authority 7 Director Efren Carreon will show how the region and Cebu are performing and what the government did to promote good governance at the local level, attract more investments and create more jobs.

University of San Carlos economics professor Perry Fajardo will give an overview on the interactions of money, banking and the financial market and their impact on the economy. Those interested are asked to contact Cebu Business Club at 253-4411. (PR)
