MORE support is needed for the continuous campaign of the Save the Asin River (STAR) project to ensure the protection of the river from pollution for the benefit of the residents today and the future generations.

STAR advocates feel the need to expand its partnership with private sectors and organizations for the realization of the different line of activities focusing on environmental education and protection drive.

Recently, STAR had an informal meeting with the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club officers for the river protection project collaboration with the aim to prevent the same fate that happened in Balili River in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Early this year the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of the Cordilleras conducted an environmental and journalism seminar dubbed “Save Asin River” at Pooten Hot Spring Resort. This was attended by the barangay officials, residents, resort owners, teachers, and students.

Tadiangan Nangalisan Hydro Ancestral Land Association (TNHALA) President Roger Sinot said the residents’ support including all the environment groups and educators are needed to strengthen their campaign.

Environment educator Professor Jay Jay Manuel said another important pursuit that needs to be given focus for the campaign is the conduct of research on the water quality management area (WQMA). This will include water testing on the tributaries of Asin River which include the Bucan River, City Camp Lagoon that run to Crystal Cave going along Asin Road, Irisan River flowing at the Irisan Bridge, and water coming from Tuba Poblacion area, Lumecneng, and Lasilas.

The result of the study will be the basis for the river protection program which will be implemented by a proposed body that will be in charge of the river protection campaign.

STAR advocates hope to have an official launching of the project this November with the help of BCBC headed by its president Frank Cimatu.

The need to sustain the STAR campaign is very essential. A continuous environmental education seminar/workshop for the river protection goals with the strong participation of the affected residents and concerned organizations is needed.
