From snapshots to cinematography

GONE are the days when a wedding coverage means mere photo and video documentation during the day of the event.

Renowned and multi-awarded Roland Jumawan, a member of the Wedding & Portrait Photographers of the Philippines, said times have changed with the technology and digital age.

The "pre-nup" pictorial, which usually happens before a wedding, has become popular late 1990s to 2000 but new trends are surfacing recently.

Jumawan, who put up his own studio in 2006 after years as a photo journalist and freelance photographer to various local and national papers, said: "Dahil sa technology, nauso na ang mga AVPs (audio-video presentations) during wedding reception kaya nagkaroon narin ng mga `pre-nup' o tinatawag naming wedding engagement session or WES na ginagawa days or weeks before the actual wedding day."

Lately, he said, cinematography is the "in thing" as the couple shoots on location with a concept, script, director and production cast.

"Usually ang story of a couple's lovelife ang ginagawan ng film talaga. The couple decides for a concept then we work on the rest," he added.

The `contemporary' is also fast gaining popularity. Jumawan said, "Pag gusto ng couple na vintage ang dating ng shoot, we go on location and bring vintage items, cars or anything vintage to make their desired concept a reality. We just suggest things but ultimately the couple decides."

SDE or same-day-edit, according to him, is also a big hit.

"Itong SDE ang gustong-gusto ng mga new generation couples kasi hindi na sila mag-aantay ng matagal para makita ang kanilang wedding photos and videos. Right at the reception, they can watch an AVP of what transpired during the WES and the wedding ceremony. Usually add-on nalang ito sa mga packages," Jumawan added.

Some couples also prefer a save-the-date or teaser video that they post on their social web accounts instead of the traditional save-the-date cards before they give away their actual wedding invitation.

The Roland Jumawan Photo & Video Studio's packages are: economy photo only (P25,000), standard photo and video (P45,000), classic photo & video (P75,000) and premium photo & video (P150,000).

The higher the price, the more inclusions. The premium package also has free on-site video to be shown during reception with free LCD projector and screen, free AVP of pre-nuptial photo and video location shoot with flashback pictures and free photo gallery 10 pieces blow-up (pre-nup pictures) 12X18 size with frame easel and lights.

But Jumawan said he also accepts photo only coverage for P5,000 or video only coverage for P10,000 while basic photo and video documentation costs P20,000.

Being a nature lover and mountaineer, Jumawan injects nature into most of his coverage especially when on location shoots. He cited the three-day location shoot he did for a couple from Pangasinan to Ilocos Sur.

"Gustong-gusto ko iyong mga forests, waterfalls, mountains and just anything na may touch of nature," Jumawan said.
