Cebuana batters gear up for Batang Pinoy

THE Cebu City girls’ softball squad is all set for the 2014 Philippine Youth Games, the Batang Pinoy 2014 Visayas qualifying leg, which will blast off on Oct. 21 to 25 in Kalibo, Aklan.

The team, which is composed of 12 players from Abellana National School (ANS) and a lone player from University of San Carlos, will be leaving for Aklan tonight together with head coach Teresita Arellano and assistant coach Jackson Genolaga.

Genolaga, the softball grassroots program coach, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that all these players have gone through the grassroots program, and joined the Mayor’s Cup softball tournament last month, which was topped by ANS Team A.

The Cebu City softball team finished second to IloIlo City on the last regional qualifier and national finals. But according to Genolaga Cebu City will have a bigger chance against Iloilo City this year.

“We have an intact team. Only two players have graduated from last year. With the exposure they had on tournaments like the Mayor’s Cup and the chemistry we have, we hope that we can give Iloilo a good fight,” he said in Cebuano.

This year’s players are Tricia Salmero, Chemarie Salmero, Floramae dela Cerna, Hezel dela cerna, Cindy Balingcasag, Auria Ranises Adolfo, Jasmen Adolfo, Maejoy Yap, Chritena Godofredo, Angelyka Neiz, Faith Ferrer Jude.

Genolaga said he and the team are very thankful for the support of the Cebu City Government and Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Ed Hayco, who provided travel expense and allowances for the players.

“We have a big chance to qualify for the national finals. We will do our best to advance,” he said.

The top two teams in the Visayas qualifying leg will get slots to the Batang Pinoy National Finals on Dec. 9 to 13 in Bacolod City.
