Young Philippine entrepreneurs win trip to Harvard

SIX Philippine students were recently named as this year’s Harvard College Social Innovation Collaborative Global Trailblazers, an award that recognizes young entrepreneurs from all over the world.

The team of students from Xavier School, Greenhills developed a paperless, online, all-encompassing framework that aims to unify and concretize the college application process. The platform is called “The Philippine Application.”

The Global Trailblazer award is granted through a program called “Village to Raise a Child,” which was initiated by the Harvard Social Innovation Collaborative.

The PhilApp Team is one of five student or student teams to receive the award from this program, which is in its first year. Other awardees hail from Brazil, Nepal, and the Sri Lanka.

All winners receive a free round-trip ticket to and from Harvard, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company, as well as mentorship from the Harvard College Social Innovation Collaborative as they complete their projects.

Winners will present their projects and be awarded at the fifth annual Igniting Innovation Summit at Harvard University on November 8. They will be speaking at the event alongside powerhouse social entrepreneurs such as Deepa Subramaniam, director of Product at charity: water, Doug Rauch, CEO of Conscious Capitalism and President Emeritus at Trader Joe’s, and Rick Ridgeway, vice president of Environmental Affairs at Patagonia.

Companies such as Adobe, Mastercard, and Shake Shack are also sponsoring the event.
