City college mulls hike in tuition for next year

THE Talisay City College (TCC) is planning to increase its tuition after more than ten years since it started operations.

Dr. Edgar Martinez, TCC dean of instruction and discipline, said they plan to pitch the proposal to the parents of their students once they get an approval from the Board of Trustees.

Talisay City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes said that while he agrees to a tuition increase for TCC, it should undergo consultation first.

Martinez told reporters yesterday that from P300, they plan to increase the tuition to P550 by the next school year.

Of the P550 proposed tuition hike, P200 will serve as miscellaneous fees while the P50 will serve as insurance for the students.

Martinez, who also serves as TCC’s caretaker, said they proposed a tuition increase due to the rising cost of commodities and to improve the school’s facilities.

Martinez said they have been asking a P300 tuition since the college started in 2004.

While TCC receives an annual subsidy of P13 million from the City, Martinez said the school must earn its own income in order to sustain its other operating expenses.

Martinez, however, clarified they have not yet implemented the tuition increase.

Martinez said that before they could implement the proposed hike, they need to conduct a consultation with the parents first.

If they are given the go signal by the college’s Board of Trustees, they will implement the increase next school year.

But de los Reyes said he was earlier apprehensive of the idea.

De los Reyes, who also serves as chairman of the TCC’s Board, said he is for tuition increase as long as consultations are made.

He said he also understands why the college needs a tuition increase, considering that TCC has been offering the amount for almost ten years now.

The city college, which was founded back in 2004, offers courses such as education, nursing, entrepreneurship and industrial and information technology.

Established during the time of former Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas, the college currently has 2,800 students.
