Rescued dolphin dies in Liloan

A SPINNER dolphin that was rescued Sunday night in the waters off Liloan town died yesterday.

Jubay Barangay Councilor Erwin Sarmiento said the three-foot dolphin was injured and was very weak when residents found it in the shallow area of the sea past 6 p.m. last Sunday.

They asked the help of Bantay Dagat personnel, who transferred the dolphin to the sea waters off Barangay Poblacion.

Officials of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) Central Visayas said they plan to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death since it did not have external injuries.

Jennefe Cabarubias, Bfar 7 veterinarian, said that when they visited the young dolphin yesterday morning, it was still alive but was very weak.

The dolphin died at around 5 p.m. yesterday.

Cabarubias said the dolphin was dehydrated. They fed it and administered fluids in an attempt to improve its condition.

They also collected blood samples to check its complete blood count.
