ACT-Negros to hold sit down strike on Nov. 14

PUBLIC school teachers belonging to the Association of Concerned Teachers (ACT)-Negros will hold a sit-down strike on November 14.

Bing Dajao, president of ACT-Negros and ACT-Region 6, said they will join the nationally-coordinated sit-down strike Friday to press for their demand to increase the monthly salary of teachers to P25,000 and non-teaching personnel to P15,000.

The current minimum salary of public school teachers is P18,549 while that of the non-teaching personnel is P9,000.

A Teacher 1 position provides a monthly basic salary of P18,549 as implemented under the third phase of the Salary Standardization Law.

Dajao said that teachers will report to their respective classes on Friday, but they will just sit down and won't hold classes.

They will also hold a march-rally at 4 p.m. from Rizal Elementary School to the plaza. The march will end at the Fountain of Justice where the rally will be held.

“We would like to appeal to our dear parents for understanding. We won't abandon our duties. The students will just be there inside the classrooms," Dajao said.

He also said that they want to provide quality education to their students which can be achieved if teachers are given the right pay.

Dajao said they also appeal to their co- teachers from the other parts of the province to join the sit-down strike.*
