Promoting healthy eating through Pinakbet Festival

THE Pinakbet Festival was a healthy competition—literally and figuratively.

Figuratively, the Pinakbet Festival was a healthy competition as it showed sportsmanship, competency and good work ethics.

Literally, it was a healthy competition as the seven teams across the Visayas competed their way to the top by cooking their own version of a healthy dish—pinakbet—at the Negros Farmers Weekend Market over the weekend.

In this competition, dubbed the “Pinakbet Festival Major Island Level—Visayas,” the contestants had to cook two dishes. One was the “Pinakbet with a Twist” in which they had to cook their most creative version of pinakbet, and the other one was their famous local vegetable dish.

The participating teams were from Bago City College (Negros Occidental); Negros Oriental State University-Dumaguete main campus (Negros Oriental); Iloilo State College of Fisheries- Poblacion Barotac Nuevo campus (Iloilo); Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College-main campus (Estancia, Iloilo); Bohol Island State University (Bilar, Bohol); Eastern Visayas State University (Ormoc City, Leyte); and University of Visayas (Cebu City).

These contestants were winners from their own different provinces.

Winning the Pinakbet Festival-Visayas leg was the

Iloilo State College of Fisheries, receiving P15,000 in cash prize; in 2nd place was the Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College, with P10,000; while the 3rd place was the Negros Oriental State University, with P5,000.

The festival’s national finals will be in Bulacan on Dec. 9. The Visayas champion will compete against the winners of Luzon and Mindanao.

The Pinakbet Festival was organized by East-West Seed Philippines, one of the leading vegetable seed production companies in the country.

East-West Seed Regional Sales manager Ronald Tolentino said that through this activity, Filipinos would understand the health benefits of eating vegetables, and be motivated into including it in their daily diet.

Pinakbet is considered as one of the most nutritious dishes in the country and a famous recipe since then.
