AFP to bring media in Caballo Island

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) considers bringing the members of the media in Caballo Island, Cavite to prove that the Filipino peacekeepers from Liberia are safe from the Ebola virus, an official said Monday.

On Wednesday, 133 Filipino contingents who served as United Nations peacekeepers in Liberia returned in the country after completing their assignment.

The Filipino troops were deployed in the Western African state amid threat of Ebola virus, which is being transmitted through bodily fluids.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), of the 14,000 people infected by the deadly virus in eight countries, 6,525 were from Liberia.

The WHO said death toll of the Ebola virus outbreak stands at 5,177, with 2812 recorded in Liberia.

Although the UN tested the troops negative for Ebola, they were still subjected to 21-day quarantine in Caballo Island as precautionary measure.

On Friday, one of the peacekeepers was brought to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine after having experienced fever and chills.

He was diagnosed with malaria.

AFP chief of staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. said he wanted to show the public that there is nothing to worry about since no one among the peacekeepers showed signs of having Ebola virus.

On Sunday, Catapang together with other military officials visited his men in the quarantine area.

On Monday, he mingled with Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and President Benigno Aquino III in the 75th anniversary if the Department of National Defense (DND) in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

"They (peacekeepers) are all well, nakakaikot na sila sa buong isla walang dapat ikabahala, protocol lang talaga na i-quarantine sila para na rin sa ikakapanatag ng loob ng publiko," Catapang said. (Sunnex)
