Defensor to visit Singapore for study tour

ILOILO Governor Arthur Defensor Sr., along with 11 other governors in the Philippines, is set to explore the programs of Singapore that make the city-state a top business destination in the world.

Defensor’s travel from November 14 to 29 is part of the Learning Exchange Program on Business Friendly and Competitive Local Government Units and Asean Integration funded by the Government of Canada.

The program, facilitated by the Local Governance Support Program for Local Economic Development (LGSP-LED), basically aims to expose the chief executives to benchmarking activities focusing on local competitiveness and approaches to business enablement in Singapore.

The study tour will also unveil the factors that make Singapore the top city with best investment potential, third in the world for foreign trade and investment, the world’s easiest place to do business, second most competitive city in the world, and best business environment in Asia Pacific and the world.

The institutions they will visit include Spring Singapore, Singapore Economic Development Board (SEDB), and International Enterprise (IE).

Spring is an agency under the Ministry of Trade and Industry that is responsible for helping Singaporean enterprises grow. It works with its partner agencies to help business with financing, capability and management development, technology and access to markets. It is also managing Enterprise One, a comprehensive information network for helping individuals to start a business.

SEDB is the lead agency for enhancing Singapore’s position as a global business center. It primarily creates strategies to benefit investors in Singapore.

IE is also a government agency that supports international trade and overseas growth of Singapore-based companies.

Based on the strategies they learned during the six-day learning exchange, the participating chief executives are expected to come up with action plans that can help make their own provinces business-friendly. (PIO)
