Lecain pleads to PVF: recognize Cebu

THE two Cebu City beach volley teams may not have reached the finals in the men’s beach volleyball tournament of the 4th Asian Beach Games but they powered through some of the toughest opponents and even reached the Round of 16.

The teams will be coming home but what awaits them might be one of their toughest opponents to date—their own federation, the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF).

“Let’s make sure the hardest opponent is not our own federation,” said Philippine Sports Commission beach volleyball consultant Eric LeCain.

LeCain continues the fight to have the Cebu teams recognized by the PVF as the official Philippine team.

Although they represented the Philippines in the recent meet, the teams were still not officially named members of the RP team that will get regular stipends and be sent to tournaments abroad.

Lecain hopes their finish in the Asian Beach Games will give make the PVF consider TCC as the national team.

TCC A, composed of Jade Becaldo and Loujei Tipgos, bowed to host team Thailand in the Round of 16, while the pair of Edmar Bonono and Edward Ybañez won three games in five outings before losing to Japan to bomb out of the competition.

LeCain said he hopes the PVF, led by president Karl Chan, will grant their request that the men’s TCC teams will become the national team.

“If they become the national team, they will get a chance to represent the country in other major tournaments such as the Southeast Asian games in June 2015. Aside from that, they will enjoy other benefits like monthly allowance and medical benefits,” said LeCain.

Cebu has played in the last five international events, placed second in the Olympic Zonal tournament, 5th in the Southeast Asia Championships and 7th in the Asian Beach Games.

Chan, however, was still in a function and could not answer questions pertaining to this issue yet.
