Ateneo Girls 16 tops Alaska Cup

THE Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) Girls 16 squad blanked Minilua, Negros Occidental in their titular showdown, 2-0, at the close of the 19th Alaska Football Cup 2014 held at the Ayala Alabang Country Club, Manila over the weekend.

AdDU booters Micaela Louise Co and Patricia Erika Francisco netted one goal each to secure the win as team captain Ma. Inah Junessa Rosales was hailed as most valuable player (MVP).

Rachelle "Ching" Delos Reyes, in a Facebook chat with Sun.Star Davao, said that she's very proud of her players, adding: "This is the first time na nag-champion tayo sa U-16 division sa Alaska Cup. Sila din yung team na nagchampion two years ago sa U-14 kaya I'm so proud of them."

Delos Reyes said in the vernacular: "We had our regular practices and trainings prior to the competition. The players became more matured now compared to the past years of competition. They've worked hard for this one and I'm satisfied that everything paid off."

The team was also composed of Chiyo Jan Marasigan, Angela Bea De Luna, Kyra Noelle Paronda, Joanna Marie Adao, Bea Panganiban, Felice Gabrielle Tuason, Nica Zsanovy Balahay, Cristian Jade Balboa and Erykah Lao with Julio Orcasitas Jr. as assistant coach.

AdDU, however, was fourth Girls 14 division while the Lady Knights Football Club (FC) placed third in the women's open division behind the services of Rosales, Magno, Adao, Panganiban, Balahay, Lao, Paronda, Balboa, Analou Ingles and Delos Reyes.

All teams received trophies, medals and Alaska freebies.

Delos Reyes added that she's really happy with the results of this year's Alaska Cup, saying: "Always na sinasalihan namin na mga tournament ay palaging outside Davao para more exposures at maimprove ang skills ng mga players." (KRP)
