FOR supporting road-sharing initiatives in Cebu City, the City Government and some organizations received an award recently from the Office of the President.
Mayor Michael Rama personally went to Malacañang last Nov. 27 to receive the “Bayanihan sa Daan” plaque of recognition on behalf of the City.
“We have been supportive of the move to provide more spaces for the pedestrian in the city,” Rama said.
The organizers particularly cited the City’s support for the Bayanihan sa Daan, a road-sharing experiment conducted in the city in 2011.
Other officials and groups who also received the recognition are City Traffic Operation Management (Citom) Executive Director, Rafael Yap, Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) board chairman Rene Mercado, the Movement for Livable Cebu (MLC), the Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board, Movers of the Road Revolution and the Green Loop scheme front liners, among others.
Councilor Nida Cabrera, who authored the Bike Lane Ordinance of the City, was also recognized for her legislation.
“We are happy that they were able to appreciate the efforts of our office particularly our personnel because we have been supportive of any move to provide more spaces for pedestrians in the city,” said Yap.
Presidential adviser for environmental protection Nereus “Neri” Acosta and Philippine Climate Change Commissioner Naderev “Yeb” Saño handed the award to the city officials.
Other local and foreign environmentalist groups were also present during the awarding.
In September this year, environmentalists also introduced the Green Loop sharing scheme in the city, where an experiment was conducted to test the road-sharing scheme they are proposing.
Though there were hitches during the experiment, the City still supported the move.
“With this recognition, surely there will be another road-sharing experiment in Cebu City next year,” Rama said.
