City to enhance mangrove area, bird sanctuary in Hinactacan

THE Iloilo City Government will enhance the mangrove area and bird sanctuary in the village of Hinactacan, La Paz district as part of its environmental management programs.

This was announced by city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog as the area was declared an ecopark and bird sanctuary partly developed by private partner Global Business Power Corp (GBPC).

The more than 50 hectares coastal public land is being developed as a green park acting as sanctuary for many endemic and migratory birds. It also acts as a natural carbon sink of the nearby coal fired power plant of GBPC.

Mabilog said the area is a potential tourism attraction and being considered as part of itinerary for delegates of the two Ministerial Meetings of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) slated in September and October 2015.

The regreening of the mangrove area is part of the 10-point agenda and program of the Mabilog administration pledged by the city mayor when he was elected as city chief executive in 2010.
