No water for 8 hours

CEBU (Updated) -- Some 5,000 households in some parts of Cebu City and Metro Cebu will have no water from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, January 3, according to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD).

The MCWD will be connecting its main pipes to a bulk water supply system in Carmen town that will allow it to augment its production by around 18,000 cubic meters per day.

Ernie Delco, MCWD general manager, said that their customers in the affected areas will experience low pressure to no water during these eight hours.

The affected service areas are Compostela, Liloan, Consolacion, Mandaue City; Barangays Mactan, Punta Engaño, Ibo, Buaya, Mactan Economic Zone 1 and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, all located in Lapu-Lapu City; parts of Barangay Mabolo and Carreta, as well as areas near M.J. Cuenco Ave., the pier area and the North Reclamation Area, all in Cebu City.

Delco said the interconnection will help MCWD expand its services by 26,000 connections, potentially enough to serve 125,000 more people.

The supply from Carmen will be the biggest bulk water supply that MCWD will get from a private supplier, Delco added.

The Carmen project, which relies on surface water, will also allow MCWD to slowly shift from their use of groundwater and help prevent over-extraction.

The water district, however, is still looking for other surface water sources.

Delco clarified that the 18,000 cbm daily supply from Carmen is just 10 percent of MCWD’s current production.

Temporary

Ahead of the eight-hour water service interruption today, Delco urged MCWD customers in affected areas to store water that they can use until regular service is restored.

For some of MCWD’s clients, the water interruption is ill-timed.

Nancy Romasanta, a resident of Lapu-Lapu City, told Sun.Star Cebu on Friday that MCWD should have timed their operations for days when water isn’t in such great demand.

“Kusog man gyud kaayo ang need sa tubig basta weekend kay daghang manglaba anang mga panahona (People need a lot of water during the weekend because that’s when most of us do the laundry),” she added.

But others, like Mark Bayalas, a resident of Barangay Santo Niño in Cebu City, said the temporary inconvenience is bearable, especially if it pays off.

“Maayo man sad na kay mas maimprove man sad ang ilang serbisyo sa ilang mga consumedor (It’s good that this will help them improve their services to their customers). Besides, it will only be temporary,” Bayalas added. (JKV/Sun.Star Cebu)
