Local market code up for amendment

THE local market code is up for amendments within 2015 in a move to strengthen the city public markets here and make it more profitable and sustainable to fit the current needs of the public.

City Councilor Rodel Fullon Agado, chairman of the SP committee on markets and slaughterhouse, made the announcement after almost finishing the investigative hearing on reported anomalies and irregularities conducted by some personnel of the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) in-charge of managing the seven public markets here.

Agado said that only some provisions of the market code are up for amendments as these do not fit in anymore to the present condition of the public markets.

One of the provisions would compel the regular employees of the City Government assigned at the LEEO to hold sensitive functions and not allow job hires and casual employees to perform the task.

Among these include the issuance of official receipts, acceptance of payments, remittance to the city treasurer’s office and others.

Agado said there is an urgent need of strengthening the public market operations and make it as a profitable undertaking of the city government.

The city is fast growing as an important business hub in the Visayas and the public markets represent the growth and resources of the city, the councilor said.
