'Amang' makes landfall in CamSur

MANILA -- Tropical Storm Amang (Mekkhala) made landfall over Camarines Sur Sunday morning as it slightly weakened.

The state weather agency said Metro Manila and 23 other areas were under storm signals as of 11 a.m.

Pagasa said Amang was estimated at 100 km west-northwest of Virac, Catanduanes or at the vicinity of Camarines Sur as of 10 a.m.

Amang packed maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph, and is forecast to move northwest at 15 kph.

By Monday morning, it is expected to be 90 km north-northeast of Casiguran, Aurora. By Tuesday morning, it is projected to be 225 km east-southeast of Basco, Batanes.

On Wednesday morning, it is expected to be 475 km northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.

Pagasa said Amang may have rainfall of 7.5 to 20 mm per hour (heavy to intense) within its 350-km diameter

Under Storm Signal No. 2 are (6 areas): Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Quezon including Polillo Island and Aurora.

Under Storm Signal No. 1 are (18 areas): Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Batangas, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Quirino, Isabela, Sorsogon, Masbate, Burias Island including Ticao Island, Marinduque, Northern Samar, Northern part of Eastern Samar and Northern part of Samar.

Pagasa reminded residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under storm signals to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides.

It added ocean waves may reach up to 6.5 meters within Amang's 350-km diameter.

Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas and the eastern seaboard of Mindanao, it said.

Pagasa also issued shortly after noon Sunday a yellow rainfall alert warning of possible flooding due to Tropical Storm Amang.

Pagasa's 12:30 p.m. yellow advisory covered Quezon and Aurora, saying flooding is possible in low-lying areas there.

It also said light to moderate rains are affecting Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal and Bulacan.

Rain may persist over these areas within the next three hours, it said. (PNA)
