SUN.STAR Bacolod’s editor-in-chief and 10 other Bacolod and Negros media practitioners were awarded by the Negros Press Club (NPC) and the Rotary Club of Bacolod-East (RCBE) at rites held at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall Saturday night.
Nanette Guadalquiver of Sun.Star Bacolod, Gilbert Bayoran of Visayan Daily Star, Arman Toga of Negros Daily Bulletin, and Mitch Lipa and Yasmin Pascual-Dormido, both of ABS-CBN Bacolod, were given Media Excellence awards by the NPC.
Fred Sapa of dyAF, Ivy Visitacion and Allen del Carmen, both of Visayan Daily Star, former ABS-CBN Bacolod station manager Ma. Luisa “Bing” Ascalon, Elsie Jolingan of Negros Daily Bulletin, and Ramy Besana, formerly with ABS-CBN and RPN TV-8, were awarded Media Lifetime Achievement awards by RCBE.
This was the second year that the NPC and the RCBE are jointly giving out the awards.
Guadalquiver has been a journalist for 19 years. She has come full circle, so to speak, as her first media job was as a reporter of Sun.Star Bacolod. Currently, she is also the Bacolod/Negros Occidental bureau chief of the Philippine News Agency.
In her acceptance speech, Guadalquiver said, "I would like to thank our colleagues for this award. Indeed, this is special because it comes from you, my own peers, who know how we all work hard day in and day out to deliver the news every day. I share this award to the news team of Sun.Star Bacolod. I also thank our president Mr. Jimmy Golez for his support.”
NPC president Dolores Epacta lauded the awardees and their contribution and commitment to the media practice.
For his part, RCBE president Dr. Benjamin Souribio said, "Indeed the partnership of RCBE and NPC is really symbolic. We are now on our second year in culminating this activity and we in RCBE will make sure that it will continue until all deserving media practitioners will be given an award.”
RCBE immediate past president Sonya Verdeflor said, "We extend our gratitude to the members of the fourth estate especially to our awardees. Thank you for your significant contribution towards our advocacy for a responsible journalism and fair media practice."
