Editorial: Topnotchers in our midst

WE HAVEN'T gotten over the euphoria of a graduate of the Mindanao Medical Foundation College (MMFC) garnering number one place in the December 2014 Dentistry Licensure Examinations when we are greeted by the news that a graduate of the University of the Immaculate Conception ranked number one too at the Pharmacist Licensure Examination.

Ben Jay Abayato Maxino landed at first place with a rating of 85.43 percent in the dentistry board. More than that, at number two is another Davao City graduate, this time from the Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF), Jan Michael Silvosa Antes. At number 6 is another DMSF graduate Shazadee Bello Imlan.

The recently released pharmacy board saw IUC graduate Jona Mari Chiong Alinas garnering 91.90 percent to top 1,292 of the 2,295 examinees in the January 2015 Pharmacist Licensure Examination.

They’re not the first ones to top the board. Davao City schools have been producing topnotchers in other courses and schools. We should constantly be congratulating them all.

The University of the Philippines in Mindanao has been producing topnotchers in the architecture board for years now, and has so far consistently garnered a 100% passing rate, a difficult feat.

While late last year, a graduate of the Ateneo de Davao University ranked number one in the Psychometrician Licensure Examination given by the Board of Psychology in Manila last October 2014, while another ADDU graduate ranked number 10.

Beyond just congratulations, we should come to realize that we have it in our education institutions to be the best. This should spur students on to focus on their studies and not waste their time and their parents’ money on vices and do their best because they are getting excellent education.

Indeed, youth should have fun integrated in it, but this should not be at the expense of one’s education, especially when it’s the kind that arms you to be among the top.

Again, we congratulate the new topnotchers and board passers, and at the same time encourage all other students to do their best in whatever course they have chosen. It’s indeed a privilege to have such a wide choice of top performing schools in the city, but a school can only be as good as the students it produces. Therefore, focus. The institutions are there to give you the best, make the most of what is within your reach.
