MOTORISTS caught violating the new speed limit on the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) in the South Road Properties (SRP) will soon be apprehended.
The speed limit on the CSCR is now between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour (kph), down from the previous speed limit of 60 kph.
Mayor Michale Rama had ordered the reduction of the speed limit to address the many vehicular accidents in the area.
Joy Tumulak, Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) division chief, said they and members of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 started distributing flyers to inform the public of the new speed limit.

Tumulak said they will continue their information dissemination campaign so no one can feign ignorance once they start apprehending violators.
“Citom will exert all effort to let the public know. We only gave flyers to those we thought were driving too fast in the SRP. Maybe they weren’t aware of the new speed limit since maybe they haven’t read or heard about it in the news,” he said in Cebuano.
The flyers contain the speed restriction provision provided under City Ordinance 801, also known as the Cebu City Traffic Code.
Tumulak said Article 7 Section 2 provides that passenger cars and motorcycles are only allowed a maximum speed limit of 40 kph when passing national roads and local roads.
Violators of the ordinance, which was passed in 1973 yet, will be fined P500 to P1,000.
Meanwhile, Tumulak said they won’t announce when they will start apprehending violators.

“They just have to be careful. Naa may giingon pod nga (There is such a thing that) ignorance of the law excuses no one,” he said.
During their joint operation with LTO 7 yesterday, Tumulak said they observed some vehicles slowing down when they see traffic personnel.
The traffic personnel were deployed in accident-prone areas along the CSCR that include the Cebu City-Talisay City boundary, L. Pardo junction, Sugbo Bldg. intersection, Mambaling junction and the Ludo Bridge.
“It is our message to the drivers not to just slow down because they see a traffic enforcer. They should realize that what the mayor is doing, along with Citom and the LTO 7, is for their own good and to prevent accidents in the SRP,” Tumulak said in Cebuano.
