DFA: No Filipino hurt in Afghanistan quake

NO FILIPINO was hurt in the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that hit Afghanistan and Pakistan last Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said there are so far no reports of Filipino casualties in the quake that claimed the lives of 280 people.

Reports said the powerful quake shook the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan and ripped through South Asia.

The quake toppled buildings, which triggered stampedes and cut out power and communication lines.

Rescue workers in Afghanistan and Pakistan rushed to start efforts to check on casualties of the earthquake.

The bulk of the casualties were reported in Pakistan, where 214 people were killed and more than 1,800 injured, disaster management authorities said.

In Afghanistan, at least 63 people were confirmed dead and hundreds more injured, with casualties reported from around half a dozen of the country’s 34 provinces.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centered near Jurm in northeast Afghanistan, which is 250 kilometers from Kabul and at a depth of 213.5 kilometers.

The quake, which lasted at least one minute, shook buildings in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, sending thousands of people rushing into the streets. (CVB/Sunnex)
