Passenger dies after SUV slams into parked truck

A SPORTS utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into a parked cargo truck in Bogo City in northern Cebu at dawn yesterday, killing one passenger and wounding the driver.

SPO3 Rogel Layson, investigator of Bogo City Police Station, identified the fatality as Carmela Abayon, 16, of Barangay Cogon West, Carmen.

The driver, 32-year-old Marianne Harman of Barangay Poblacion, Medellin, sustained serious physical injuries and was brought to a hospital in Cebu City.

The accident took place on the national highway of Barangay Dakit at 1:45 a.m. The victims were on their way home to Medellin from Cebu City.

‘Speeding’

According to bystanders, the SUV was running at least 80 kilometers per hour, Layson said.

Upon reaching Barangay Dakit, it smashed into an Isuzu cargo truck driven by Robert Cinco Abella, 38, of Masbate City.

The truck loaded with polyvinyl chloride pipes was parked by the road after it encountered engine trouble around 10 p.m. last Wednesday.

The truck was scheduled to board a ferry for Masbate City at 12 a.m.

The SUV was heavily damaged, particularly in the right portion where Abayon was seated.

The victims were brought to the Bogo City District Hospital, but Abayon was declared dead on arrival.

Police were able to talk with Harman right after the accident, who said she fell asleep. “Ang kaning namatay kay gipaeskwela ni niya (The victim was her scholar),” Layson said.

Dead on arrival

In a separate accident, a 12-year-old boy died after he was hit by a pickup truck in Barangay Guinsay, Danao City last Wednesday afternoon.

Initial investigation conducted by SPO1 Reynante Manulat of Danao City’s Traffic Office revealed that Jhon Carl Capuyan was crossing the road when he was hit by a Mitsubishi Strada.

The vehicle driven by Richell Tumulak, 45, of Barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City came from Bantayan Island and was heading to the city when the accident occurred at 1:21 p.m.

The boy suffered serious physical injuries and was rushed to Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City, but he didn’t make it alive.

Tumulak surrendered to police shortly after the accident.

A complaint of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide is being prepared against him.
