All set for Bata chess fest

THE 5th Barangay Bata Standard Chess Tournament 2015 is set on February 7 and 8 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish gym in Bacolod City.

Bata councilman Roderick Gregas, one of the tournament front runners, said they hope to gather the best young chess players in Bacolod City and neighboring cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental.

The tournament aims to promote and develop the skills of young players to be highly-competitive, create awareness, involve the local community to patronize the sport in Barangay Bata, and give the residents a better playing venue.

The tournament will feature two categories, the 20 & Under, and 12 & Under with prizes ranging from P3,000 for the champion, P2,000 for the second placer, and P1,000 for the third placer as well as trophies.

The fourth to tenth placers will get P200 each and medals.

Registration is pegged at P200. Deadline is on February 6. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chess set.

An “Inter-Purok” side event is also set for Bata residents.

Expected to grace the event’s opening ceremony are Councilor Archie Baribar and village chieftain Angelito Abaring.

The chess event is organized by the Negros Chess Society Inc. in cooperation with Barangay Bata Council headed by Abaring through the efforts of Gregas.
