Palace to public: Be vigilant vs opportunists

MALACANANG asked the public on Thursday to be vigilant against some "opportunist groups" which have been using the death of the 44 police commandos to advance their own interest.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. made the call amid the plan by some groups, including the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) Alumni Association Incorporated, to hold a rally on Sunday to call for justice for the members of the PNP-Special Action Force (SAF) who were brutally killed in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on January 25.

He said according to PNPA Alumni Association, the upcoming rally would not be political in nature.

"Habang nakikiisa tayo sa pag-alala ng kabayanihan ng PNP-SAF 44, mahalaga ding maging mapagmatyag at mapagmasid sa mga grupo na nais samantalahin ang pagdadalamhati at gamitin ang pagkakataon upang isulong ang kanilang kahina-hinalang layunin," Coloma said in a press briefing.

He recalled that during the 29th year anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution last month, some groups tried to use the event in asking the people to hold another people power against the administration of President Benigno Aquino III.

Among those present at Edsa rally last month were the President's uncle and his wife, Jose "Peping" and Margarita "Tingting" Cojuangco.

The groups were calling for the President to resign after the botched Mamasapano operation.

Asked if the President was considering the declaration of a state of emergency in the event that calls for him to resign snowball, Coloma said, "Sa pangkalatahan, ang ating bansa ay nasa maayos at mapayapang kondisyon."

"Hindi natin binibigyan ng kahalagahan dahil sa pagkilala natin na maayos naman at mahinahon ang kalagayan ng ating bayan at sino man ang gustong magkaroon ng taliwas na sitwasyon ay dapat tanungin kung ano ang layunin nila," he added. (SDR/Sunnex)
