Escario traffic scheme stays after test: Rama

CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama yesterday ordered a status quo on traffic management on Escario St.

“It is not necessary actually, it may be a case-to-case basis, but it’s not substantial as of now,” Rama told reporters when asked when a new traffic scheme will be implemented in the area.

This would mean that the no left turn and u-turn slots in the whole stretch of the road that the Mayor earlier proposed will not be implemented yet.

Minor traffic adjustments on Escario St. since Sunday will be canceled, said City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) Chief Rafael Christopher Yap.

“Traffic movement in the area is back to normal,” he said.

Yap explained that a traffic experiment, such as the two-way traffic along Gov. M. Roa St., has been withdrawn since Sunday night for a traffic impact assessment.

Yap said all the proposed adjustments on Escario St. will also have to go through the Citom Board, the approving body.

Rama said the removal of the concrete barriers at the center of the road helped a lot in allowing wider space for vehicles.

The Department of Engineering and Public Works has completed the asphalting of some portions of the road where the concrete barriers were placed.

For three days, Rama has been monitoring the traffic on this route.

When asked about his plan to include Gov. M. Roxas St., or the road that cuts through the Provincial Capitol compound, Rama said it will push through.

“The governor was already in agreement to include the road in a traffic loop,” Rama said.

Rama said the road inside the Capitol compound may be accessed only during the day, depending on their agreement later on with the province.

But only private vehicles will be allowed to access it, Rama added.
