MCWD assures public there’s enough supply

METRO Cebu’s main water supplier assures the public they have enough supply despite threats from an impending heat wave.

But officials of the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) still advised consumers to conserve water as their daily production slowly decreases due to the heat.

Ernie Delco, MCWD general manager, said that despite the hot weather, they can still produce 21,000 cubic meters per day as their bulk supplier, the Cebu Manila Water Development (CMWD), is providing around 18,000 cubic meters (cbm) from its surface water source in Carmen.

Delco said that while their two surface water sources - the Buhisan Dam in Cebu City and Jaclupan Weir in Talisay City - might be affected by the heat wave, they can still provide ample supply until July this year.

The Buhisan Dam, which provides three percent of MCWD’s total daily production, has lowered its production from 6,000 cbm per day to 3, 000 cbm per day.

While the Jaclupan Weir, which produces around 30, 000 cbm per day, is also expected to drop its daily production rate but drastically. Delco said that the Jaclupan Weir produces around 15 percent of MCWD’s total production.

Production

Delco said that even if the weak El Niño phenomenon slowly affects their surface water sources, some areas like Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova now have a 24 hour supply of water due to the CMWD’s production.

But Delco said their production could be affected if the weak El Niño prolongs after July.

But Delco still advises the public to conserve water as the heat wave often forces their supply to increase due to consumers wanting to fight off heat stroke and dehydration.

He advised consumers to regularly check faucets, toilets and pipes for leaks and have them repaired immediately.

Delco also advised their consumers to store water during the off-peak hours or at 10 p.m. onwards.

Delco also added that the public should also practice simple ways to conserve water such as not leaving the faucet on while washing dishes or recycle water for cleaning and flushing.
