Army goes on alert for NPA’s 46th year

THE Philippine Army in Western Visayas went on alert ahead of the 46th anniversary of the New People's Army (NPA) on March 29.

"It has been a routine and it's nothing new because even without the anniversary, the rebels are doing atrocities to the people. However, whole year round, the Army is doing its role as guardian of the people," said Major Ray Tiongson, spokesman for the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division.

"We urge the remaining NPA members who have been misled into lawlessness to abandon the armed violence, live a peaceful life, and join us in bringing peace and development to the communities," he said.

The Army reports that 20 NPAs in Western Visayas have surrendered, seven of them from Panay and 13 from Negros.

Recently, 35 more rebels in Southern Negros Occidental surrendered.
