Cops arrest 4 men in taxi driver slay

POLICE arrested on Wednesday afternoon, October 25, the four men who were involved in robbing and killing a 56-year-old taxi driver in Barangay Labangon, Cebu City.

Suspects Arman Batulan, 21; Janno Mancera, 19; John Ian Amigabie, 18; and Jun-jun Carlito Barbon, 21, were caught by the operatives of Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).

Supt. Ryan Devaras, CCPO’s Investigation and Detective Management Branch chief, said Batulan and Barbon are being considered as the main killers of Jose Medrano Sering Jr.

He said they will subject the four suspects to a paraffin test to identify who fired the gun.

Barbon said it was Batulan who shot the victim. Batulan, however, denied the allegation and pointed at Barbon as the triggerman.

Batulan said he was outside the taxi when the victim was shot.

He named Barbon as their leader, which the latter denied.

A rifle, a .38 revolver, two knives, stolen identification cards and other documents were recovered from the suspects.

SPO2 Wetzel Berry, homicide investigator, said the suspects have criminal records and are alleged drug users.

A security guard near the crime scene told the police that he heard two gunshots.

He then approached the taxi and found the bloodied victim.

Sering possibly tried to fight the culprits before he was shot twice.

A slug was found in the taxi, but no empty shells were recovered. The gunman was possibly armed with a revolver.

Sering, whose last assignment was in Bohol Provincial Police Office before retiring last year, was an employee of Ken Taxi. He was a resident of Barangay Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City. (KAL)
