Baguio bets scores 19 golds in Batang Pinoy Luzon leg

BAGUIO City guns for another over-all title in the on-going Luzon leg of the Batang Pinoy in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

As of 11:30 a.m., October 24, athletes from the Summer Capital have already snatched 19 gold medals, including 27 silver and 24 bronze with combative sports leading the way.

City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said taekwondo bagged nine golds, 10 silver, and 10 bronze while arnis had seven golds, nine silver and six bronze to keep Baguio’s dream of bagging the over–crown alive.

Archery also won its second gold medal courtesy of Adrielle Parayno while Danielle Espiritu and Resha Ronquillo added a silver and bronze, all in the 3 meter cub girls category adding to its earlier four silver and four bronze medal haul.

Gonzales added swimming has also produced a gold and a bronze in the weeklong sports competition while athletics ha chipped in three silver and two bronze while karatedo added a silver and a bronze medal.

Trailing Baguio City in the medal standing is San Jose City, Nueva Ecija with 10 golds, and a silver while La Union has 6-5-7 as Laguna closes in with 5-2-1.

Batang Pinoy is the national youth sports competition of the Philippines for athletes under 15-years-old established through the Executive Order No. 44 which was signed by then President Joseph Estrada in December 2, 1998.

The city has fielded close to 400 athletes battling other local government unit bets across Luzon.

During the national finals held in Tagum City last year, the Summer Capital took home 55 gold medals including 41 silver and 41 bronze medal besting Cebu City with 43-31-32 and Davao City (35-44-65). (Roderick Osis)
