Acedo ends DLSU stint on high note

DAVAO City's Rowelyn Joy Acedo ends her stint with the De La Salle University (DLSU) women's varsity chess team by clinching two gold medals in the recently-concluded 2017 National University Games (Uni-Games) chess competition at the Dumaguete City Convention Center.

DLSU emerged champion in the team competition while Jose Maria College of Davao City placed second to take the silver medal.

The Holy Angel University ended up with the bronze.

Acedo also won the board 4 gold as teammate Ella Grace Moulic also of Davao City pocketed the board 3 gold.

DLSU's woman international master (IM) Bernadette Galas and Mira Mirano captured the boards 1 and 2 golds, respectively.

"As always, proud kaayo ko na i-represent ang DLSU and for the last time nakuha napud namo ang championship (I am proud to represent DLSU for the last time we won the championships again)," she said in a Facebook interview with SunStar Davao.

She, however, admitted that the field is not as strong as before.

"Though dili ana kakusog ang field karon pero proud and happy ko sa among performance kay nakita pud nako sa akong mga teammates na ready na sila for Uaap (Although our rivals were not as strong as in the past I am still happy and proud of our performance because I see that my teammates are ready for the new Uaap season)," she said.

In the men's division, Jose Maria College annexed the gold over STI West Negros University, Holy Angel University and St. Louis University-Baguio who grabbed the next three spots.

JMC was bannered by Hareve James Sumatra, Rafael dela Torre, Bhing Joel Gimony and Raymart Silao.
