USLS booters reclaim UniGames football title

UNIVERSITY of St. La Salle (USLS) survived the tough challenge from National University (NU) in a shootout, 4-3 to reclaim the University Games men’s football title late Friday, October 29, at the Silliman University football field in Dumaguete City.

With both teams settling for a scoreless draw after the regulation and extension period, they went into the penalty shootout.

Of the first five kickers, both teams remained even at 3-all with USLS scoring behind Charles Ivan Barberan, Rio Ian Perez, and Elimona Usman while Stingers Regie Cisneros and Tristan Kit Robles’ attempts were saved by the NU keeper.

NU’s sixth kicker took the first attempt but was saved by USLS’ keeper John Mark Jamelo as Charles Dabao sealed the win.

USLS multi-titled head coach Norman Fegidero said it was a well-deserved win for the team after missing last year’s UniGames.

“It’s also a good exposure for my players especially that the Nopsscea tournament starts in two weeks,” he added.

Meanwhile, in basketball, Rizal Technological University (RTU) dominated both the men’s and women’s divisions.

STI West Negros University and Hercor College of Capiz settled for first and second runners-up in the men’s division while Negros Oriental State University and Silliman University finished the 2-3 ranks apiece.

In beach volleyball, RTU and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos ruled the men and women’s divisions, respectively, while University of Sto. Tomas captured the crowns of both men and women’s volleyball and athletics events.

RTU also won the sepak takraw event followed by St. Louis University and Silliman University. (HGD)
