31 people hurt in Balamban highway accident

CEBU (Updated) -- Thirty-one persons, mostly teenagers, were injured after a truck they were riding met an accident on the Transcentral Highway in Barangay Cansomoroy, Balamban town, Cebu, past 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1.

The government-owned truck (SKV-552), which reportedly lost its brakes while it was traversing downhill, hit the concrete barrier on the right lane, bounced to the other lane and stopped after hitting the base of a cliff.

Police Officer 1 (PO1) Rodgie Montejo of Balamban Police Station said most of the truck's passengers were members of Grace Gospel Church who were on their way home to Asturias town after attending a youth camp in Cebu City.

Eleodoro Mongaya, information officer of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center where the victims were admitted, identified some of the injured persons as:

Montejo said the truck driver, Axel Jaime Abrasaldo, 51, suffered wounds to the head and other parts of his body. Abrasaldo and one of the passengers were unconscious when they were brought to Balamban District Hospital.

Montejo said he saw a passenger whose nose was broken and other passengers who suffered bone fractures in their feet and cuts in their bodies.

The injured victims were brought to the hospital onboard three ambulances from Balamban and a medical van from Asturias.

Montejo was among the four police officers led by Senior PO4 Revelito Tadique who attended first to the wounded passengers. The policemen came from a patrol duty in Barangay Gaas when they passed by the area.

Montejo added that the accident site is where the bus carrying mostly Iranians crashed on June 13, 2010, killing at least 21 passengers and wounding 26 others. (SunStar Cebu)
