Macabebe tops in aquaculture, says mayor

MACABEBE Mayor Annette Flores Balgan disclosed on Friday that the municipality remains to be the center of aquaculture production in Pampanga province.

“This is just to set the record straight that we are the top producer of shrimps, bangus, tilapia and crabs in Pampanga,” Balgan said.

Balgan said that this is based on the total land area of fishponds in the fourth district coastal town.

The mayor said the town have some 10,000 hectares of fishponds, most of

which are in five villages in Macabebe.

Balgan added that nearby Masantol benefits from Macabebe’s production because the former has a fish port.

“Some of products are brought to the Masantol fish port that’s why the nearby town seems to be producing more aquaculture than us,” she said.

The largest fishponds, according to Municipal Assessor Engr. Edwin Ibay, are located in barangays San Esteban (2,386 hectares), Consuelo (4,145 hectares), Dalayap (1,056 hectares), Sta. Maria (1,197 hectares), and Castuli (310 hectares).

Earlier, the Bureau of Fisheries of Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said

Pampanga remained the top producer of shrimps and tilapia in the entire country.

The province contributed 39 percent to the total national production of shrimps, the BFAR added.
