DepEd to conduct Brigada Eskwela for Marawi schools

THE Department of Education (DepEd) is getting ready to do a Brigada Eskwela sa Marawi to help schools in Marawi City in the eventual reopening of classes.

But Eusebio Aguanta, the DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) coordinator, said the specific date for the Brigada Eskwela has yet to be determined following an assessment by DepEd engineers from all divisions nationwide on November 6.

"Yung mga DepEd engineers all over the country will come to Marawi on November 6. They will assess the situation of the schools. And they will make a report to identify the materials needed to start making these schools at least functional for their new opening of classes," Aguanta said, adding that they are expecting for the program to happen as soon as the assessment is finish or within the month of November.

Aguanta also said the deployment of DepEd engineers to Marawi City is a nationwide mandate and will be led by DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service Director Ronilda Co.

The Brigada Eskwela sa Marawi, Aguanta said, aims to prepare the school to ensure the classrooms in Marawi City will be ready for the reopening of classes. He added that the DepEd-Northern Mindanao Director Allan Farnazo already planned to carry out the said program even before it was institutionalized.

"So far we have earlier identified 12 schools that DepEd-10 (Northern Mindanao) will assist in the Brigada Eskwela sa Marawi, involving all 14 divisions under DepEd-10 (Northern Mindanao) will be there for this purpose," Aguanta said.

DepEd DRRM coordinator said the activities that will be done during the Brigada Eskwela sa Marawi are doing minor repairs within the classroom, making sure they are usable during the reopening of classes.

"The basic activities will be the preparation of the classroom, preparations sa mga blackboards, fixing school furniture that are still usable, painting, cleaning of the classroom," Aguanta said.

He said DepEd also received assistance and donations from private sectors/organizations, such as learning kits, cleaning kits, and others in the form of financial assistance.

Brigada Eskwela sa Marawi is a program organized by DepEd to assist in the recovery and reconstruction of Marawi City after the 5-month siege in the city.
