Dinner with a view

LET'S go out of the country this time, since there was no time to explore Davao City last week, and let's check out a very popular pedestrian food street in Singapore that comes complete with a view -- the Makansutra Gluttons Bay. The word Glutton got me. It was saying it as it is.

Ace Bigcas was our generous host that night, an entertainer at Universal Studios and working in Singapore for ten years now, it was heartening to tag along with this girl whom I knew as a high school student from Baracatan. (Sakit ng likod ko).

With us that night was Doc Mae and her husband, the perfect hosts for a very reluctant and boring tourist that I am, because they won't force you to go around if you don't want to.

Food courts are pretty common in Singapore and that's where the people eat to get a sampling of everything that this tiny island-nation offers.

I let Ace pick for me although I made sure we veered away from the seafood that could afford you two eat-all-you-can crabs dinner in Davao for one piece over there. (Friends always tell me never to convert, but then, the prices just keep jumping out at me). Ace chose well though. I liked the carrot cake, which Ace clarified isn't carrot.

He was pointing the menu to me, asking if I want the black or white "carrot cake" when all I could see was something that looked like an omelet (the white one) and some dark stuff that can pass off as Adobo sprinkled with chives. "Hindi yan carrot, Ate, radish yan," she said.

We also got the mixed satay (small), which gives you skewered barbecues of different kinds -- beef, chicken, whatever else, the pineapple fried rice, and the chicken wings. We topped our meal with ice kachang, Singapore's halo-halo. We ate all that while watching the Singapore skyline.

Around us, we can hear Filipinos talking. If you are like me, a very reluctant tourist who is not into malling or shopping or a frenzied run around every tourist area, then Esplanade is the place for you. Just make sure you get the table nearest the Esplanade when you're at Makansutra, to enjoy the view.
