25 join in Davao Region skills competition

A TOTAL of 25 competitors from all over Davao Region competed in the three-day Regional Skills Competition, which kicked off Sunday, November 5, and will end on Tuesday, November 7.

The winners will represent the region in the Mindanao Zonal Battle of the Best in December in preparation for Asean Skills competition next year.

Dr. Gaspar Gayona, Tesda-Davao regional director, said yesterday that the competition was held at the Regional Training Center–Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center (RTC-KPVTC) Davao in Tibungco, Davao City and at Holy Child College of Davao located in Ponciano Reyes Campus, Davao City from November 6 to 7.

“The skills competition is in the law. It is our way of looking at how competitive our programs because the skills competition that is happening in the country is in preparation for Asean and for the World Skills,” Gayona said.

This is also an avenue for the students to showcase what they have learned in the classroom and from their trainers as well and not merely a competition. It is also an advocacy program to further promote the importance on equipping oneself with skills for better employment.

“It’s not just a competition, it’s a demonstration of the students and how far they have gone in developing their competencies beyond the classroom, beyond the workshop,” he added.

Skills competitions on the areas of beauty therapy, electrical installation, hairdressing, plumbing and heating, and welding transpired on Sunday.

While on Monday until Tueday, competition on automobile technology, cooking, graphic design technology, information network cabling, IT network systems administration, IT software solution for business, mechanical engineering CAD, mechatronics, refrigeration and air-conditioning, restaurant services, web design, power rice machinery, and motorcycle technology took place.

Gayona said the winners will be the region’s representative for the Mindanao Zonal Battle of the Best in December. They will also advance to the Philippine Nation Skills Competition (PNSC) in 2018.
