PO1 Mae Sasing was supposed to tie the knot with her live-in partner next month. Instead of the preparations for her wedding, her family is now busy preparing for her burial.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza visited the wake of Sasing in Barangay Jugan, Consolacion and extended financial assistance out of her personal money last week.
In a press conference yesterday, Radaza said she was told by the elder sister of Sasing, Jeraline, that the slain policewoman was supposed to get married next month.
“Magminyo na man unta supposedly (Sasing and her live-in partner planned to get married) this December,” she said.
Sasing was shot while driving her motorcycle on her way home to Jugan last Oct. 31. She was assigned at the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office-City Public Safety Company.
Mandaue City Police Office in coordination with other government agencies arrested Felix Taytayan, a former boyfriend of Sasing, three days later, after all the evidences they gathered pointed to him as the main suspect in the killing of the policewoman.
In a text message to SunStar Superbalita, Jeraline said she knows Taytayan. “Nakaila kaayo, maam. Unya naghisgot sad siya nga kani si Taytayan magsige niya og samoksamok (I really know him. Sasing even mentioned before that Taytayan keeps on disturbing her),” Jeraline said.
“Basi sa imbistigasyon sa kapulisan ug sa mga ebidensya nga nakuha nila, kami kumbinsido nga siya jud ang mamumuno (Based on the investigation of the police and the evidences that they gathered, the family is convinced that he is really the suspect),” she said.
Sasing will be laid to rest on Nov. 12 at the Manila Memorial Park in Liloan.
The colleagues of Taytayan in the marine vessel where he served as an apprentice were not convinced that he killed Sasing because they claim he was there in the ship in Pier 3 in Cebu City when the incident happened.
When asked if Taytayan was a fall guy, Senior Supt. Roberto Alanas, director of MCPO, said they will just leave it up to the court to decide on the case that they have filed, which they based on the evidences that they gathered.
Earlier, Alanas said that hatred, after Taytayan was rejected by Sasing to bring back their relationship, pushed the suspect to shoot the victim.
Sasing and Taytayan were in a relationship when they were still in college taking up criminology, but their romance ended in 2007. For her part, Radaza believed that MCPO validated the information and evidences that they got before they arrested Taytayan.
In a report from dyAb radio, Taytayan said he will just answer all the allegations against him in court and he will just leave it all to God.
Police Regional Office 7 Director Jose Mario Espino defended Mandaue City Police Office in its arrest of Felix Taytayan, the alleged killer of PO1 Mae Sasing.
He said the case against Taytayan is strong and the suspect is not a “fall guy.”
“We have reasons to believe that he is the prime suspect,” he said.
Espino said Taytayan can defend himself in court with the testimonies of his fellow sea vessel workers, who said the suspect did not leave the boat docked in Pier 3 of Cebu City on the night of Oct. 31 when Sasing was shot dead.
Espino, however, said that a civilian employee of Lapu-Lapu City Police Office saw Taytayan visit Sasing past 8 a.m. last Oct. 31. (KAL, FMG)
