Health office told to submit data on city’s HIV-Aids cases

BACOLOD City Councilor Em Ang, chairperson of committee on health, said Thursday that she will require the City Health Office (CHO) to submit to the City Council the data on Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection-Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV-Aids) cases in the city.

Ang said they want to verify the exact number of HIV-Aids cases after Bacolod was earlier reported as second to National Capital Region (NCR) in terms of HIV-Aids cases.

“When I came to know about it from social media, immediately I had to look for the actual statistics before I can even believe it,” she said.

The councilor added that Bacolod is actively campaigning for HIV-Aids testing.

Dr. Babylin Drilon, head of the CHO Social Hygiene Clinic, had earlier said that from 2007 to October 2017, Negros Occidental has a total of 590 HIV-Aids positive cases, of which 300 are from Bacolod.

She said they will validate the data of the Department of Health Epidemiology Bureau showing Bacolod as second to the NCR in terms of HIV-Aids cases.

Drilon noted that the DOH Epidemiology Bureau records showed that Bacolod has a total of 340 HIV-Aids cases.

From 2007 to October 2017, Bacolod has a total of 59 deaths due to HIV-Aids, CHO records showed.

Ang recalled that recently, Bacolod held HIV-Aids testing in various areas and the numbers increased in terms of persons who got tested.

“So maybe, if we will compare this with other cities, we have numbers because of our massive campaign while the other cities might have not submitted their data,” the councilor said.

Ang pointed out that the City Government should verify the HIV-Aids cases because it can also create some form of concern or alarm, and the CHO should submit the data so that the City Council can aid them on what steps to take.

“Bacolod City is very aggressive on information campaign because it is the only way to stop or minimize the number of cases,” she added.
