Completion of ‘Yolanda’ housing expected in 2018

THE National Housing Authority (NHA) is eyeing the completion of all housing units for the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda in Negros Occidental in 2018.

Engineer Alejandro Ongsuco, head of NHA-Bacolod, said that by next year, families who lost their homes in November 2013 will ultimately use the housing units intended for them.

Ongsuco said that each housing unit costs P290,000, of which P195,000 was used for the construction, and P95,000 for the lot unit.

The lot unit is 40 square meters in diameter while the floor area is at 28.4 square meters.

Ongsuco said that once the units are finished, the NHA will also construct a school building for the housing community to be run by the Department of Education as well as a multi-purpose center.

The residents that will benefit from the housing units will also be enrolled automatically in the government’s livelihood projects.

The NHA official said the residents will live for free in the housing units in the next five years. By the sixth year, they will start paying P200 per month for the lot.

Ongsuco added that the construction of units started in 2015, but they were unable to complete the houses quickly because the funds they have been receiving were incomplete which hampered the construction efforts.

He said the government has set aside a budget for its implementation this year and while the bidding process will begin soon.

A total of 27,055 housing units are being planned for construction in Negros Occidental.
