Farmers' Day winners receive cash prizes

WINNERS of various contests during the 8th Farmers' Day at the Cebu City Hall grounds over the weekend have received cash prizes from the City Agriculture Department (CAD).

Participants from Barangay Sudlon bagged the P20,000 top prize for having the Best Booth. Barangay Tabunan got the second place with P15,000 while Barangay Pamutan ranked third with P10,000 prize.

For the urban gardening contest, Barangay Suba won the first place with P,8000 prize followed by barangays Bulacao and Apas with P7,000 and P6,000 cash prizes, respectively.

Other participating barangays also won several contests during the three-day event that started on Wednesday at the Plaza Sugbo grounds.

Barangay Sapangdaku won the flower arrangement, cooking, tuba-drinking, and sweetcorn-eating competitions, while barangays Binaliw and Bonbon won the chicken-dressing and farmers' jingle contests, respectively.

Winners in the flower arrangement and farmers' jingle contests will receive P2,000, while a P1,500 prize will be given to other winners.

Farmers' Day is held every year to "showcase the agricultural products of the upland barangays of Cebu... to carve their market reach and to strengthen the [city's] farm tourism," said Apple Tribunalo, CAD officer-in-charge.

Tribunalo said she hopes that more participants from other barangays and more spectators, especially the youth, will join next year's Farmers' Day celebration. (Erica Jill Dancel, USC AB Communications Intern)
