THE City Government has no plans yet to allot money from the city’s budget to build a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant, said Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
On the sidelines of the official launching of the restaurant Aposento Davao in Matina I.T. Park, the mayor said their visit to the city of Kitakyushu to witness the city’s WTE technology does not signify sure investment of the city to WTE just yet.
“If we can already receive the note, document, or letter from the government of Japan that they have interest for a WTE in the city, that’s the only time we can be certain because for now, we do not plan to allot money in our budget to build a WTE plant,” said the mayor.
However, in previous reports, the mayor said the Japanese government had unofficially committed to give a grant to Davao City for a WTE plant. She also said the Davao City government recognizes the need to plan for the solid waste management of the city for the next three to five years.
The City Government of Davao was invited by the Kitakyushu City government to witness and check out the latter’s WTE technology and their other best environmental practices concerning solid waste management.
“They invited a contingent of 10 persons, all-expense paid by the city of Kitakyushu to Japan. So what I did, 8 will be coming from the city government and the other 2 coming from Eco-waste Coalition which is an organization opposed to WTE so discussion in Kitakyushu will be transparent and they would see the WTE technology as well,” she said.
The visit to Kitakyushu is scheduled from November 26 to December 2.
