Tour players mull links with Sugbo Mercado for millennial travelers

THE Cebu Association of Tour Specialists (Catos) is eyeing a partnership with the Sugbo Mercado Food Bazaar Inc. (SMFBI) to cultivate food tourism here and sell this to foreign tourists.

Catos president Alice Queblatin said they are willing to tie up with Sugbo Mercado and include them in their tour itinerary so foreign tourists will get the chance to experience another taste of Cebu’s food tourism.

Queblatin said the Sugbo Mercado is an appealing concept to the millennial travelers who are into experiential tourism. She added that the food bazaar, which hosts quite a good number of tenants, would also give foreign guests the chance to interact with the locals.

The Catos official even welcomed the idea of Sugbo Mercado opening a daily food bazaar so it could cater to all tourists arriving in the province every day.

“The millennials are a hot market for the travel and tourism industry. We are preparing packages that would give our guests the best experience here,” said Queblatin.

Sugbo Mercado was created with the goal of being the first and biggest year-round weekly food market in Cebu and as a venue for the best of the best of Cebu as well as budding new players in the local food industry in a collaborative environment.

This longest food market in Cebu offers an alternative open-air events space catering to corporate or product launches and roadshows on top of regular in-house entertainment activities like food showdowns, bands, shows and other promotions.

By the first quarter of 2018, SMFBI will be opening its regular food market bazaar to invite more aspiring food entrepreneurs in Cebu to come out in the open.

Unlike the existing concepts where tenants at Sugbo Mercado operate every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, this new food market concept dubbed “The Market” will be Cebuanos’ everyday dining destination.

The Market is a 3,000-square-meter food market to be situated in the North Reclamation Area (NRA). It will be a container-van food market concept that will be exclusive to 25 tenants.

Last year, Sugbo Mercado was officially endorsed by the Department of Tourism-Central Visayas as Cebu’s “First Weekend Food Market … promoting individual brand identity and presenting diverse culinary delights from the Philippines and other parts of the world while supporting micro food entrepreneurs by providing the perfect venue to enable these to reach and expand their market.”
