NCIP backs move to allot 1% of NGA budgets for IPs

THE National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP)-Davao on Wednesday, November 15, reiterated the importance of the resolution sent by the Regional Development Council 11 for national government agencies to allocate one percent of their budgets for the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) programs and projects.

NCIP-Davao regional director Geroncio Aguio said the IPs are considered as among the vulnerable sectors in society, and they need the attention both of the national and local government agencies.

The IPs have been dealing with several issues and concerns which other government agencies, aside from the NCIP, should look into and address, Aguio said, adding that NCIP is doing its best to do the same.

In a Resolution No. 81, Series of 2015, there is a need to establish the means for the full economic, social and cultural development/empowerment of the IPs so that they shall become productive members of the community.

A strong support in terms of agency budget allocation for government programs, services and resources is needed, similar to the allocations for gender and development, senior citizens, youth and persons with disabilities.

The council finds it appropriate that IPS be given priority in government services with the provision of a regular fund support through programs and projects dedicated to the IPs here in Davao region.
