DAVAO City Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre is seeking revisions for the Halal lane ordinance recently passed by Davao Councilor Bai Halila Sudagar since the Halal accreditation body indentified in the ordinance has changed.
Alejandre, in a press conference last Tuesday, November 14, said that accreditation body for halal was not yet determined by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
"We had a meeting three weeks ago and we discussed the ordinance on how we can reconcile it with the problem on the national level on the identification of accredited body. The identification of the accredited body now rests on DTI. In the ordinance passed of Councilor Halila she mentioned an accrediting body, and it happened that it was no longer recognized," Alejandre said.
Sudagar, in her ordinance on segregation of Halal food and non-Halal food in the supermarkets, said that the City Health Office, City Veterinarian's Office and Business Bureau, with National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) will consist the task force that will monitor the supermarkets, shops, stores, centers, suppliers and other establishments.
Alejandre added that they intend to discuss the possible changes of the ordinance with majority floor leader Bernard Al-ag and Councilor Sudagar.
H added that they will consult with the City Legal Office if there is the need for the ordinance to be re-filed back to the Council.
He said once it will be passed, it will be the first time that the local government will implement such ordinance.
